The Human Rights Committee

The Human Rights Committee of the National Component was created by the National Executive, based on a National Component Policy Statement adopted by the 1978 National Component Convention.

The National Component promotes human rights and equity for all members, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, age, mental or physical ability, Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis or Inuit), race, colour, creed, ethnic/national origin, religious belief, political belief, marital status and conviction for which a pardon has been granted.

The aims and objectives of the Human Rights Committee are:

  • To provide support and guidance to members regarding human rights and equity issues.
  • To assist Locals, the National Component and the PSAC in their efforts to achieve equity for all members.
  • To promote a greater understanding of issues relating to human rights and equity.

Human Rights Committee Membership

The membership of the Human Rights Committee consists of the National Vice President for Human Rights, Assistant National Vice President for Human Rights, and 10 Human Rights representatives and their alternates, who represent members in their respective regions including countries outside Canada. In addition, there are five Equity Representatives representing Aboriginal people, racialized members, women, people with disabilities and LGBT members.

The Human Right Committee holds at least two meetings per year, and in the interim, conducts their business via teleconference calls and e-mails. Currently the Human Rights Committee is:

  • Developing Regional Action Plans that would reflect their work in the regions, with the Locals and at the national level in raising awareness and promotion of Human Rights
  • Planning the next Triennial Human Rights Conference
  • Provide guidance and advise to members in their regions on employment equity and other Human Rights issues, particularly in their portfolio area of expertise

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Human Rights representative in your Region.
